Ubuntu captive portal

I thought it would be fun to set up a captive portal to let anybody use my broadband connection... maybe somebody might even pay a quid.

The idea is:

• Use an old wireless router to give open access.
• Connect the network/uplink socket on the router to eth1 on my Ubuntu box.
• Use iptables to masquerade clients connected via eth1 so that they can use the Internet.

However, I would like some information about who is using my connection. There may be some bloody stupid legal necessity for collecting user information too. Therefore I need to:

• Initially block all traffic, and re-direct web requests to a website on eth1 to ask users to sign up or log in.
• After login, do some iptables jiggery pokery to allow the user‘s MAC address through.

Searching the Internet, the only solutions seemed to be very complicated.

However, then I found Andy Beverley‘s page which describes exactly what I‘m after. I haven't tried it yet...
